    How alerts are matched to your locations

    Our pipeline ingests warnings from every official source — BOM, JTWC, Geoscience Australia, USGS, AFAC/state fire services and AFDRS — and normalises them into a single, de-duplicated hazard feed. Every saved location has a point (lat/lon) and an alert radius you set (5–200 km, default 50 km). Each hazard is matched to your locations using PostGIS spatial queries with true great-circle distance, and BOM warnings are further refined using official forecast-district polygons and coastal zones.

    Quiet hours & severity: SMS and voice are paused during your quiet hours and never used for Info-level events (those still go to email and push). Emergency and Catastrophic alerts always break through quiet hours.
    State-border filter: When an official warning lists affected states, we only match locations inside those states — so a NSW warning will not trigger for a QLD subscriber even if they are within radius.
    BOM warnings — per-district matching: Each BOM warning lists the forecast districts and coastal zones it covers. We split the warning into one alert per named area and match against that area's centre point with a tighter 40–200 km radius (smaller for metro zones, larger for inland districts). This works alongside our global PostGIS hazard matching to give precise, location-specific alerts rather than simple proximity pings. If a named area isn't in our reference list yet, we fall back to a state-wide 250 km match so you're still notified, and the unknown name is logged so we can add it.
