This page shows every earthquake recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the selected time window. Pin colour and size reflect the magnitude, and the badge on each list item maps directly to the USGS severity classification — from minor tremors under M2.5 through to great earthquakes of M8.0 and above.
Australia experiences far fewer earthquakes than countries on tectonic plate boundaries, but our region is surrounded by some of the world's most active seismic zones — including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Zealand. A magnitude 6.5 or larger event off our coast can generate tsunamis that reach Australian shores within hours, which is why we surface tsunami-flagged quakes prominently and highlight any significant Australia/Oceania activity at the top of the page.
