Mediterranean Climate Patterns

Perth is defined by its Mediterranean climate, situated on the Swan Coastal Plain between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp. This geographical position results in hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. During the warmer months, the city often experiences the Fremantle Doctor, a cooling afternoon sea breeze that provides relief from high temperatures. Rainfall is highly seasonal, with the vast majority of precipitation occurring between May and September as cold fronts move through from the Southern Ocean.

In summer, this ridge sits to the south, directing dry easterly winds across the coastal plain. Conversely, in winter, the ridge moves north, allowing vigorous frontal systems to fetch moisture and wind from the west and south-west.

While Perth sits south of the typical tropical cyclone strike zone, the remnants of these systems can occasionally track down the coast, bringing heavy rain and gale-force winds. The most common severe weather threats involve deep low-pressure systems during winter, which can cause coastal erosion and damaging winds. Heatwaves are a significant feature of the local climate, often lasting several days as stagnant high-pressure systems prevent the arrival of cooler coastal air.
