Climate and Elevation

Armidale Airport sits at an altitude of over 1000 metres above sea level, placing it within a temperate climate zone that is notably cooler than most of New South Wales. The primary driver of the local weather is this elevation, which leads to crisp conditions and a high frequency of morning frosts during the cooler months. While the latitude suggests a subtropical influence, the height of the Northern Tablelands ensures a distinct four-season cycle.

Seasonal Variations

In summer, the region generally avoids the extreme oppressive heat found further west in the state, though afternoon thunderstorms are a common occurrence as moisture-laden air is lifted over the Great Dividing Range. It is one of the few regions in the state where light snowfall is a possibility when cold polar air masses move up from the Southern Ocean and interact with local moisture.

Wind patterns at the airport are frequently influenced by the surrounding topography. Westerly winds often prevail during the winter and spring, sometimes reaching high speeds as cold fronts pass across the inland slopes. During the warmer months, easterly changes can bring increased humidity and cloud cover from the coast. Fog is another significant factor for the area, particularly in autumn and winter, as cold air settles into the valleys and basins of the Tablelands overnight, potentially impacting visibility until mid-morning.
