Cook sits within a semi-arid climate zone, positioned deep within the Nullarbor Plain of South Australia. Its geographic location, far from the tempering influence of the southern coastline, results in a landscape defined by extreme temperature fluctuations. During the summer months, the region is frequently subjected to intense heat as hot air masses move across the central Australian deserts. Conversely, winter nights can see temperatures drop significantly under clear, stable atmospheric conditions.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

The weather in this part of the state is largely influenced by high-pressure systems that track across the Australian continent. In the autumn and winter, these systems often bring calm, sunny days with very little cloud cover. Rainfall is characteristically sparse and unpredictable, often occurring as a result of cold fronts sweeping up from the Southern Ocean or occasional moisture incursions from the north. These frontal systems can bring brisk winds that scour the treeless plains, making wind chill a factor for those outdoors.

Severe Weather and Hazards

The primary weather risks for Cook involve extreme heat and dust storms. During summer, the region can experience prolonged heatwaves which increase the risk of fire in the surrounding scrublands. Because of the open, flat terrain, strong northerly winds can lift surface dust, occasionally reducing visibility across the Trans-Australian Railway. While thunderstorms are less frequent than in the tropical north, they can occur during the transition between seasons, sometimes producing dry lightning which poses a risk to the local environment.
