Emu Hill is located within the northern reaches of the Great Southern region in Western Australia. During the summer months, Emu Hill frequently encounters high temperatures and low humidity. This is the period when the risk of bushfires is most prevalent, often exacerbated by hot northerly winds drawing heat from the desert. Thunderstorms can occur during these months, occasionally bringing dry lightning or brief, intense downpours associated with decaying tropical systems moving south from the Kimberley or Pilbara regions.

Winter and spring are typically the wettest periods for the wheatbelt. Frontal systems and low-pressure troughs originating in the Southern Ocean track across the southwest of the state, delivering the consistent rainfall required for local broadacre cropping. While these fronts lose some intensity as they move inland towards Emu Hill, they remain the primary source of moisture for the region.

Local Environmental Factors

The open, undulating landscape of the eastern wheatbelt allows for significant wind fetch. Strong wind gusts are common ahead of cold fronts in winter and during the heat of summer afternoons. Clear winter nights often lead to temperature inversions, resulting in morning frost across the paddocks and low-lying areas around the Emu Hill townsite.
