Regional Climate and Topography

Esk is situated in a transition zone between the humid coastal plains of South East Queensland and the more elevated, drier terrain of the Great Dividing Range. This geography influences the local esk weather patterns, often resulting in slightly warmer daytime temperatures during summer compared to Brisbane, as the cooling sea breezes are partially obstructed by the coastal ranges. The town's position in the shadow of Mount Glen Rock and near the shores of Lake Wivenhoe and Lake Somerset creates a unique microclimate where humidity can linger during the warmer months.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

During the summer months, Esk frequently experiences atmospheric instability common to the subtropics. This often manifests as afternoon thunderstorms that move eastward from the Darling Downs. These systems can bring heavy rainfall and occasionally hail, making the use of an esk weather radar essential for tracking storm cells. In contrast, the winter months are typically characterised by clear skies and mild days, though overnight temperatures can drop significantly due to cold air drainage in the valley, leading to frost in low-lying areas.

Conversely, the Brisbane Valley catchment is sensitive to significant rainfall events. While Esk is inland, it can still feel the effects of ex-tropical cyclones or east coast lows, which bring sustained heavy rain and can impact local road access near the Brisbane River and its tributaries.
