Evelyn is situated within the southern reaches of the Atherton Tablelands, a highland region that provides a distinct contrast to the humid tropical coastline of Queensland. Due to its significant elevation above sea level, the local climate is generally cooler and less humid than nearby Cairns. The area is characterised by a seasonal rainfall pattern typical of the Australian tropics, with a pronounced wet season occurring during the summer months and a drier, cooler period throughout winter.

During the summer months, the region is influenced by the monsoon trough, which can bring heavy rainfall and increased cloud cover. While the elevation helps moderate the peak temperatures experienced further inland, high humidity levels are common during this period. In contrast, the winter months often see clear skies and significantly cooler overnight temperatures. It is not uncommon for the tablelands to experience morning mist and fog, which usually clears by mid-morning to reveal mild, sunny conditions.

As a part of Far North Queensland, Evelyn is subject to the risks associated with the Australian cyclone season, which typically runs from November to April. While the inland position and terrain provide some protection from the full force of coastal storm surges, the region can still experience high wind gusts and intense rainfall from decaying tropical cyclones or low-pressure systems. These events often lead to localised flooding and can impact road access. Additionally, the transition into the dry season increases the risk of bushfires, particularly when dry south-easterly winds prevail across the plateau.
