Koodnanie Dam is situated in the desert region of South Australia, characterised by an extremely dry climate and significant temperature fluctuations. This area falls within a low-latitude desert band where clear skies are the norm for much of the year. During the summer months, intense solar radiation leads to high temperatures, while the absence of cloud cover often results in rapid cooling once the sun sets.

The prevailing weather at Koodnanie Dam is governed by high-pressure systems that move across the continent. In winter, these systems bring cool, crisp days and cold nights where frost can occur in low-lying depressions. Summer brings the risk of extreme heat, with northerly winds drawing hot air from the centre of Australia. Rainfall is infrequent and highly variable, often occurring as a result of decaying tropical depressions moving south from the Northern Territory or isolated convective thunderstorms during the warmer months.

Environmental Risks

Dust storms are a notable feature of this region, particularly when strong frontal systems cross the state. These events can significantly reduce visibility across the local tracks. Additionally, while the area is arid, the complex drainage of the Lake Eyre Basin means that heavy rainfall hundreds of kilometres away can eventually lead to local flooding. High evaporation rates are a constant factor, influencing the water levels and surface conditions around the dam and surrounding claypans.
