Tropical Climate and Seasonal Shifts

Koolan is located in the northern Kimberley region, a part of Western Australia defined by a distinct tropical wet and dry cycle. Unlike the temperate southern reaches of the state, this latitude experiences high humidity and significant moisture influxes during the summer months. The weather is influenced by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, which govern the local temperature profile and seasonal rainfall distribution.

The Wet Season and Cyclonic Activity

Between November and April, the Kimberley coast enters its wet season. During this period, Koolan is susceptible to tropical cyclones that form in the Timor Sea or the eastern Indian Ocean. These systems can bring heavy rainfall, gale-force winds, and significant storm surges to the archipelago. Even when a cyclone does not make direct landfall, the associated monsoon troughs often result in frequent thunderstorms and high humidity levels that characterise the northern summer.

The Dry Season and Southeast Trade Winds

The transition to the dry season usually occurs in May, bringing more stable conditions to the region. During these months, the prevailing winds often shift to the south-east, drawing drier air from the Australian interior. This period is marked by clear skies and lower dew points, making it the most predictable time of year for maritime and industrial activities on the island. While temperatures remain warm, the absence of monsoonal moisture provides a reprieve from the intense humidity of the preceding months.
