Koongalala Point is situated within the mountainous terrain of the Gold Coast hinterland near the New South Wales border. This elevated position within the McPherson Range influences local conditions, often resulting in slightly cooler temperatures and higher rainfall totals compared to the coastal strip. The surrounding temperate rainforest and rugged ridgelines create a unique microclimate where mist and low cloud are frequent occurrences during the cooler months.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

During the summer months, the region is dominated by moist easterly winds from the Coral Sea. This period typically brings the highest rainfall, often delivered via afternoon thunderstorms or the remnants of tropical lows moving southwards. The humidity during this season can be high, though the elevation provides some relief from the oppressive heat felt at sea level. In contrast, winter is characterised by drier air and clear skies as high-pressure systems move across the continent. Frost is possible in the lower valleys of the hinterland during these months, though the ridgelines usually remain more temperate.

Weather Risks and Considerations

Given its location in South East Queensland, Koongalala Point is susceptible to severe weather events. During the spring and summer storm seasons, the region can experience intense rainfall events that lead to rapid runoff in the steep catchment areas. While the area is south of the primary tropical cyclone strike zone, the remnants of such systems can still bring damaging winds and flooding. Furthermore, the dense vegetation of the surrounding national parks means that fire weather is a significant consideration during dry, windy periods in late spring and early summer when westerly winds bring hot air from the interior.
