Regional Climate and Elevation

Koonyum Range sits within the humid subtropical climate zone of northern New South Wales. Its position on the edge of the Whian Whian State Conservation Area and its significant elevation above the Mullumbimby valley influence local conditions. Temperatures here are often slightly cooler than on the coastal fringe, with the range frequently intercepting moisture-laden easterly winds coming off the Pacific Ocean.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

During the summer months, the area is prone to high humidity and significant precipitation. This region is one of the wettest in the state, often receiving heavy falls from atmospheric troughs and the occasional remnants of ex-tropical cyclones moving south from Queensland. Summer afternoons frequently bring orographic thunderstorms that develop as warm air is forced up the steep slopes of the range.

Winter and spring generally offer clearer skies and more stable conditions. However, the Koonyum Range can be susceptible to East Coast Lows. These intense low-pressure systems bring damaging winds and torrential rain to the New South Wales coast, often causing flash flooding in the valleys below and high-wind events along the ridgelines.

Environmental Risks

The dense vegetation and rugged topography of the hinterland mean that bushfire awareness is a priority during the drier spring and early summer periods. Conversely, the high annual rainfall makes the access roads to the range vulnerable to landslips and debris during sustained wet weather events. Monitoring the radar and local warnings is a standard practice for those residing in or travelling through this part of the Byron Shire.
