Regional Climate Characteristics

Kooroowi is positioned within the Bellingen Shire, a region known for its lush vegetation and high annual rainfall. The climate here is classified as humid subtropical, characterized by warm to hot summers and mild, relatively dry winters. Because of its location between the coast and the escarpment, the area often experiences orographic lifting, where moisture-laden air from the ocean is forced upward by the rising terrain, leading to significant precipitation events.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

During the summer months, the weather is often dominated by humid northeasterly winds. This moisture can fuel atmospheric instability, resulting in frequent afternoon thunderstorms. These storms are a primary source of rainfall during the warmer months but can also bring risks of localized flash flooding. In contrast, the winter period is generally more stable, with cooler nights and clear, sunny days as high-pressure systems move across the state.

Significant Weather Risks

As with much of the New South Wales Mid North Coast, Kooroowi is susceptible to East Coast Lows. These intense low-pressure systems can develop off the coast at any time of year, bringing gale-force winds and torrential rain that may lead to riverine flooding in the nearby Bellinger River catchment. During the spring and early summer, the risk of bushfires increases when hot, dry northwesterly winds blow from the interior. Residents should remain aware of fire danger ratings and local emergency warnings during these periods of high heat and low humidity.
