Regional Climate Characteristics

Macrossan sits within the dry tropics of North Queensland, positioned west of the Great Dividing Range. This location results in a climate that differs significantly from the humid coastal strip near Townsville. The region typically experiences a distinct wet season during the summer months and a prolonged dry season through winter and spring. Because it is situated further inland, the temperature range is often more pronounced than on the coast, with higher maximums during the summer heat and cooler overnight temperatures during the winter months.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

The summer months are characterised by high heat and the potential for significant rainfall events. While Macrossan is not directly on the coast, it is still subject to the influence of the monsoon trough and tropical lows which can bring heavy downpours and localised flooding to the Burdekin River catchment. During these periods, humidity levels can rise sharply, although the air generally remains drier than in the coastal tropics.

Severe Weather and Risks

As with much of inland Queensland, heatwaves are a primary weather risk during the late spring and summer periods. The combination of high temperatures and dry vegetation also increases the bushfire risk before the arrival of the summer rains. While tropical cyclones usually weaken as they move inland, they can still deliver damaging winds and intense rainfall to the Macrossan area. Conversely, the winter months are generally stable with clear skies and light winds, though the lack of cloud cover allows heat to escape rapidly at night, occasionally leading to very crisp mornings.
