The McPherson Range forms a significant part of the Great Dividing Range, situated on the border between South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales. This geography dictates a humid subtropical climate influenced by significant orographic lift. As moist air moves inland from the Coral Sea, it is forced upward by the steep escarpments, often resulting in higher rainfall totals and more frequent cloud cover than the surrounding lowlands. The dense rainforest canopy and high elevation typically ensure temperatures remain several degrees cooler than those recorded in Brisbane or the coastal suburbs.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

Summer in the McPherson Range is characterised by high humidity and the frequent development of afternoon thunderstorms. These storms can be severe, occasionally bringing heavy downpours and lightning. During the autumn and winter months, the region experiences clearer skies and much cooler nights. Frost is possible in the higher valleys and cleared areas during the middle of the year. The prevailing winds generally shift from moist easterlies in the warmer months to drier westerly flows during the winter and early spring.

Due to its position in the subtropics, the range is susceptible to significant weather events. Heavy rainfall associated with East Coast Lows or the remnants of tropical cyclones can lead to rapid runoff and localised flooding in mountain streams. The steep terrain also increases the risk of landslides during prolonged wet periods. In the drier spring months, the region must monitor bushfire conditions, particularly when hot and gusty winds move across from the interior of the continent. Cloud and fog are common year-round, which can significantly reduce visibility on mountain roads and walking tracks.
