The primary weather risks for this part of Queensland include extreme heatwaves and seasonal flooding. During the height of summer, prolonged periods of high temperatures require careful management of water resources and heat safety. When heavy monsoon rains fall in the upper catchments, the river systems in the North West can rise rapidly, isolating properties and cutting off major transport routes. While bushfires are a risk in the drying grass after a productive wet season, the local landscape is more frequently defined by the cycle of drought and sudden inundation.
