Regional Climate Characteristics

Toowoomba occupies a distinct geographical position on the crest of the Great Dividing Range. Situated approximately seven hundred metres above sea level, the city experiences a temperate climate that differs significantly from the humid subtropical conditions found in nearby Brisbane. This elevation results in cooler average temperatures and a more pronounced seasonal cycle than much of South East Queensland.

Seasonal Variations

Summer months in the Garden City are typically warm with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. These storms often develop over the higher terrain of the range, bringing heavy rainfall and occasionally hail. Despite the summer heat, the altitude provides relief from the intense humidity experienced on the coastal plains. Winters are notably brisk by Queensland standards, characterised by crisp mornings and clear, sunny days. Frost is a regular occurrence in low-lying pockets of the city during the cooler months, as cold air settles in the valleys of the range.

Weather Hazards and Patterns

The primary meteorological concerns for the region include severe thunderstorms during the warmer months and thick fog during autumn and winter. The city's position on the escarpment means that moist air rising from the Lockyer Valley can quickly condense, leading to reduced visibility that impacts local transport. While Toowoomba is inland, it can still feel the effects of decaying tropical systems or significant east coast lows, which may result in prolonged periods of rainfall and gusty winds across the Darling Downs.
