Regional Climate and Coastal Influence

Tower Hill is situated within a dormant volcanic crater in Western Victoria, a geographical feature that creates a distinct microclimate while remaining heavily influenced by its proximity to the coast. Its position at approximately 38 degrees south latitude places it directly in the path of the prevailing westerly winds, often referred to as the Roaring Forties. These winds bring frequent frontal systems across the Southern Ocean, ensuring that the region receives consistent rainfall throughout the year, with a noticeable peak during the cooler winter months.

Seasonal Patterns and Southern Ocean Fronts

The weather in this part of Victoria is characterised by its rapid changes. During summer, the area is generally milder than inland Victorian towns due to the cooling effect of the sea breeze. However, the region can still experience significant heatwaves when northerly winds pull hot air down from the interior of the continent. These conditions often precede cold fronts, which can cause temperatures to drop by ten degrees or more in a very short period. In winter, the landscape is defined by overcast skies and persistent drizzle, with cold south-westerly streams bringing brisk conditions and occasionally heavy squalls.

Severe Weather Risks

Given its exposed coastal location, Tower Hill is frequently subject to high wind warnings. Severe gales can impact the region during the passage of deep low-pressure systems, which are most common in late winter and spring. Additionally, the surrounding Western District is a high-risk zone for bushfires during the summer months when dry vegetation and high temperatures combine with strong winds. Unlike northern parts of Australia, this region does not experience tropical cyclones, but it is susceptible to intense low-pressure cells that can result in localised flooding and coastal erosion along the nearby Shipwreck Coast.
