Welford National Park sits within the arid to semi-arid climatic zone of Queensland. The weather here is defined by extremes, with high summer temperatures and cool, dry winters. Because the park is situated on the floodplains of the Barcoo River, localized rainfall can have a disproportionate effect on the landscape. Even light falls can turn the self-mulching clay soils, often called black soil, into impassable boggy tracks.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

During the summer months, the region is dominated by intense heat. Large high-pressure systems often stall over the interior, leading to prolonged heatwaves. While this part of Queensland is far from the coast, it can still be influenced by the remnants of tropical lows or northern monsoonal troughs. These systems occasionally bring significant rainfall and thunderstorms, which are the primary source of moisture for the local river red gums and coolibah woodlands.

The winter period offers much milder conditions. Clear skies are the norm as dry air masses move across the continent from the southwest. While daytime temperatures remain pleasant, the lack of cloud cover allows heat to escape rapidly after sunset. Overnight frosts are possible during mid-winter, particularly in the open Mitchell grass plains away from the sheltering timber of the river systems.

Bushfires are a seasonal risk, especially following a productive wet season when the growth of spinifex and grasses provides ample fuel. Conversely, flooding is a major consideration. The Barcoo River is part of the Cooper Creek catchment; rain falling hundreds of kilometres upstream can cause the river to rise and isolate visitors.
