Regional Climate Patterns

Woondum is situated in the sub-tropical transition zone of South East Queensland, inland from the Sunshine Coast and south of the Mary Valley. The local climate is characterised by warm, humid summers and mild, clear winters. Because of its proximity to the Woondum National Park and the surrounding foothills, the area can experience slightly higher rainfall than more open coastal plains, as moisture-laden air from the Coral Sea is forced upwards by the local terrain.

Seasonal Weather Drivers

During the summer months, Woondum weather is often influenced by the movement of the South Pacific Convergence Zone and the occasional arrival of troughs from the west. These systems can trigger significant thunderstorm activity, which provides much of the region's annual rainfall. In late summer and autumn, the threat of tropical lows or ex-tropical cyclones moving southwards brings the risk of heavy rain and localised flooding in the Mary River catchment area.

Winter and Fire Risks

Winter conditions in this part of Queensland are generally stable, dominated by high-pressure systems that bring dry south-easterly winds. While frosts are less common than in the higher elevations of the Great Dividing Range, the cooler overnight temperatures are a staple of the season. As the landscape dries out during the spring months, the region monitors fire weather closely, as rising temperatures and gusty westerly winds can increase the risk of bushfires in the dense eucalypt forests and surrounding rural properties.
