Regional Climate Characteristics

Yarragee is situated on the south coast of New South Wales, just inland from Moruya. This location puts it within a temperate climate zone where the weather is heavily moderated by the Tasman Sea. The proximity to the Deua National Park and the coastal ranges means that local conditions can differ significantly from the immediate shoreline, often seeing slightly higher daytime temperatures and cooler nights during the winter months.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

During the summer months, Yarragee is subject to humid northeasterly winds which can bring moisture and afternoon cloud cover. The region is also prone to the arrival of 'Southerly Busters', which are abrupt cold fronts that move up the coast, causing rapid temperature drops and gusty winds. In autumn and winter, the area often experiences settled conditions, though it remains vulnerable to East Coast Lows. These intense low-pressure systems can bring heavy rainfall, gale-force winds, and significant coastal erosion to the broader South Coast region.

Environmental Risks

The local geography, characterised by thick forest and river flats, dictates the primary weather risks. Bushfires are a significant concern during hot, dry summers when northwesterly winds bring scorched air from the interior of the state. Conversely, the Deua River system makes the area sensitive to flooding during periods of sustained heavy rain. Frost is a common occurrence in the cooler months, particularly in the lower-lying areas away from the salt air, where cold air drainage settles overnight.
