Tropical Savanna Dynamics

Borroloola sits within a tropical savanna climate zone, situated approximately 50 kilometres inland from the coast. This geography creates a distinct seasonal cycle where the year is divided into the wet season and the dry season. During the summer months, the region is influenced by the monsoon trough, which brings significant humidity and heavy rainfall. The presence of the McArthur River means that runoff and flood potential are regular considerations for the local community during these high-rainfall periods.

The Dry Season and Southeast Tradewinds

As the year progresses into the winter months, the weather is dominated by dry southeasterly tradewinds. This period is characterised by clear skies, lower humidity, and warm temperatures. Unlike the southern states of Australia, Borroloola does not experience true cold winters, though overnight temperatures can drop noticeably compared to the daytime peaks. This is the primary time for travel and outdoor activities in the region, as the road access is more reliable when the monsoon rains subside.

Severe Weather and Cyclone Risks

Due to its proximity to the Gulf of Carpentaria, Borroloola is within a zone susceptible to tropical cyclones. These systems typically develop between November and April, bringing the risk of destructive winds and intense rainfall. Even when a cyclone does not make a direct landfall near the township, the associated moisture can lead to widespread flooding that isolates the community. Heatwaves are another factor, particularly during the build-up months of October and November, when heat and humidity levels rise before the first significant rains arrive.
