Gray is positioned on the eastern slopes of the Tasmanian highlands, a geography that dictates much of the local weather behaviour. Unlike the drier rain-shadow regions of the Midlands, this area often captures moisture-laden air moving off the Tasman Sea. This results in a climate that is generally cooler and more humid than the coastal fringe at nearby Chain of Lagoons. The elevation plays a significant role in temperature regulation, frequently leading to misty mornings and lower maximum temperatures during the summer months.

In winter, Gray is susceptible to vigorous cold fronts that sweep across the Southern Ocean. These systems bring consistent rainfall and can occasionally result in light snowfall on the higher peaks surrounding the township. The community remains mindful of the high rainfall totals that can occur when low-pressure systems develop off the East Coast, sometimes leading to rapid runoff and localised flooding in the steep terrain of the Fingal Valley region. During the summer, while the heat is rarely as intense as inland Australia, the dense vegetation and forest cover make bushfire monitoring a seasonal priority for residents.

The local conditions are often dictated by the strength and direction of the winds. Easterly flows can bring persistent cloud cover and drizzle, while westerly winds often arrive drier after crossing the Central Plateau. Because Gray sits at the transition point between the coast and the inland ranges, the weather can change with little warning as maritime air masses interact with the topography of the Douglas-Apsley National Park area.
